Software engineer resume examples

Entry-level software engineer resume: Alex Morgan. A campus job and a three-person class project. Education and projects come first because they show Alex’s preparation for an engineering role.

Alex Morgan

Software Engineer

Portland, ORalex.morgan@example.comportfolio.example/alex

Education

BS Computer Science, Example State University
September 2022 to June 2026

Projects

Task tracker, three-person class project
January to March 2026, TypeScript and PostgreSQL

  • Implemented the task API, including create, update, and assignment endpoints, while teammates built the interface.Ownership stays visible. Alex built the API, not the interface. Turn projects into bullets
  • Added version checks to detect conflicting updates and integration tests that sent competing edits.
  • Documented local setup and the API contract so teammates could connect the interface. The project was not run in production.Limits stay on the page. The line says the project never ran in production.

Course schedule explorer, personal project
October to December 2025, Python and SQLite

  • Built a command-line tool to filter a public course dataset by meeting time and department.
  • Added tests for missing meeting times and repeated course records; wrote usage examples in the README.

Experience

Campus computer lab assistant, Example State University
September 2024 to June 2026

  • Helped students troubleshoot workstation sign-in and printing problems during scheduled lab shifts.
  • Recorded recurring issues and passed unresolved account problems to campus IT.

Skills

  • TypeScript, Python, SQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, Git, API integration testsEvery tool has a source. Each one appears in a project above.
Backend software engineer resume: Jordan Patel. Paid backend work leads. Staging work and production support stay apart, and no line claims a number nobody measured.

Jordan Patel

Backend Software Engineer

Chicago, ILjordan.patel@example.comportfolio.example/jordan

Summary

Backend software engineer working with Go, Python, and PostgreSQL. Experience building event-processing services, testing failure handling, and maintaining internal APIs.

Experience

Software Engineer, Example Billing Company
July 2023 to September 2026

  • Built a Go billing worker with retry handling and PostgreSQL-backed idempotency checks; tested duplicate event delivery in staging before handing it to the release team.Scope stays visible. Staging tests show the failure handling, and the line claims no production ownership. Tailor a resume to a job
  • Added integration tests for retry exhaustion and malformed events, and documented failure cases for the team’s review.
  • Paired with the operations engineer to investigate failed production jobs using application logs; did not own the on-call rotation.Shared work, named. Jordan’s part is the logs work, and the line says who owned on-call.

Software Engineer, Example Tools Company
August 2021 to June 2023

  • Maintained Python endpoints for an internal inventory tool used by the support team.
  • Implemented request validation for incomplete imports and regression tests for the rejected-record response. No number needed. The new error response and its tests explain the change without a percentage. Bullets without numbers
  • Documented the import format and worked with a support teammate to reproduce reported failures.

Skills

Go, Python, SQL, PostgreSQL, Git, event processing, integration testing, application logs

Education

BS Computer Science, Example Institute of Technology
September 2017 to May 2021

Senior software engineer resume: Samira Chen. Grouped skills, then the decisions, rollout, mentoring and on-call work that make a senior resume.

Samira Chen

Senior Software Engineer, Backend Systems

Austin, TXsamira.chen@example.comportfolio.example/samira

Skills

  • Languages: Go, Python, SQLSkills name real tools. Each one shows up in a line below, so none stands in for a vague skill.
  • Backend and data: Kafka, PostgreSQL, Redis
  • Infrastructure: AWS ECS, Docker, Terraform
  • Observability: OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana

Experience

Example Commerce CompanyAustin, TX

Senior Software EngineerMarch 2021 to September 2026

  • Designed the migration from Python order-processing jobs to Go consumers on Kafka. Chose a staged backfill over dual writes and agreed on order and payment reconciliation queries with the payments team. The decision is on the page. A staged backfill over dual writes is a choice a reader can ask about.
  • Implemented PostgreSQL transactions and unique event keys to make replay safe; committed Kafka offsets after database writes and tested crashes between the write and commit.
  • Packaged the service in Docker and defined AWS ECS tasks in Terraform. Planned three rollout stages with reconciliation checks and rollback steps, partnering with SRE on deployment.
  • Added OpenTelemetry traces, Prometheus consumer-lag metrics, and Grafana dashboards. Used the traces to find a slow PostgreSQL lookup during backfill and added an index verified with query plans.
  • Mentored two engineers through consumer partitioning and retry designs, reviewing their implementations and failure tests before release.Senior without managing. Mentoring shows through designs and reviews, with no claim of managing people.
  • Served in a five-person on-call rotation; recovered a stalled consumer by replaying events with the idempotency checks and documented the procedure in a runbook.

Example Routing CompanyAustin, TX

Software EngineerAugust 2017 to February 2021

  • Built Python endpoints backed by PostgreSQL for a fulfillment routing service, including validation and error responses for incomplete destination records.
  • Added a Redis cache for repeated route lookups, with expiration and invalidation when routing rules changed; tested rule updates against cached results. The line AI tried to inflate. An AI rewrite turned this into a platform-wide initiative with a 40% gain. Use AI without inventing
  • Wrote SQL queries to investigate rejected imports and added API regression tests for the failures reported by support.

Education

BS Computer Science, Example Technical University

Google Docs

  1. Download the Word template above.

Adapt the template to your own work

  1. Read the posting and name the work it asks you to do.
  2. Pick the experience that shows that work, and order the sections around it.
  3. For each line, say your part, the technical decision and the result you can back up.
  4. Check names, dates, tools, ownership and numbers. Remove every bracketed prompt.
  5. Export your own PDF, check its page breaks and that its text can be selected, and follow the employer’s requested format.

Quill can ask about the details your resume leaves out and prepare a version from facts you confirm. You review the wording and send the application yourself. Read how the resume interview works.

Common questions

Is this an ATS-friendly resume template?

The template uses one column and standard section headings. Applicant tracking systems (ATS) vary, so follow the employer’s file requirements and check the information filled in after an upload. A template cannot guarantee that a system will read every field correctly.

Can a resume include class projects?

Yes, when they show relevant work. Say it was a class project, what your part was and where it stopped. Keep production experience separate.

Do I need a summary or a projects section?

Keep a section when it adds proof. A short summary can point a reader at an experienced engineer’s focus. Cut it when it repeats the page, and cut projects when stronger work already answers the role.

Does every line need a number?

No. Write resume bullets without numbers shows what to write instead.

Can I use the template without Quill?

Yes. Download it, edit it in your document editor and send it yourself. The examples are illustrations, not hiring results or a promise of interviews.

Let Quill ask about the work behind your resume.

Upload your resume. Quill asks about what it leaves out, then writes a version for each role you pick.
