Use AI on your resume without inventing experience

AI rewrites tend to add things: leadership you didn’t have, scale you didn’t run, a number nobody measured. Samira’s cache line shows how it happens, and four checks catch it.

Samira is made up, and so is every example in these guides.

The short version

  1. Read each suggested line for what it now claims, before you judge how it sounds.
  2. Check ownership, scope, tools and results against what you did.
  3. Keep the details you can back up, and let the gaps show.

1Read what the line now claims

A rewrite can quietly change who did the work, how far it reached, which tools it used and what it achieved. Read for those changes before you decide whether the line sounds stronger.

Samira told an assistant: “I added a Redis cache to the route lookups in our routing service. It cleared entries when routing rules changed, and I tested rule updates against it. I never measured latency.” It suggested: “Led a platform-wide caching initiative on Redis Cluster that cut latency by 40%.”

2Run the four checks

Ownership
Did you lead, build, help or maintain? Samira built the cache herself. “Led an initiative” claims a team she didn’t run.
Scope
One endpoint, one service or the whole platform? Coursework, staging or production? Samira’s cache served one service’s lookups.
Tools
Did you use the named tool? Samira used Redis, and Redis Cluster is a different setup. Using one tool doesn’t mean you’ve used every tool like it.
Results
What changed, and how do you know? A percentage needs a measurement. Samira has none, so the 40% goes.

When a detail is missing, ask one focused question. “How did you check this?” turns up a test, a benchmark, or the plain answer that nobody measured it. Write resume bullets without numbers shows what to write then.

3Keep what you can back up

Samira’s own line is shorter on adjectives and longer on facts: what she cached, when the cache cleared and how she tested it. A reader can ask her about every word of it.

A team result can stay a team result. “Implemented the retry handler for a team-built service” tells a reader more than a claim to the whole service.

4Let the gaps show

Quill works from facts you confirm. It reads your resume, asks about the work it leaves out, and shows you the facts it heard before using them. Confirming a fact doesn’t add it to your master resume; you decide when it belongs there. How confirmed experience is organized.

When a posting asks for something your record doesn’t show, the review desk says so and leaves the gap open. You can add experience you have, or apply without it. Your own read of each line still matters.

Common questions

Should I stop using AI on my resume?

No. It’s good at wording and order. Run the four checks on every line it hands back, because it can’t know what you did.

Does Quill submit applications for me?

You review and send every application yourself. Downloading or approving a resume doesn’t send it anywhere.

Let Quill ask about the work behind your resume.

Upload your resume. Quill asks about what it leaves out, then writes a version for each role you pick.
